Reflections on "New" Lake Pedder. The fight to save the unique coastal environment of Lake Pedder National Park from a hydro electric project is the environmental issue that galvanized opinion against destructive development in Tasmania’s pristine natural areas. Lake Pedder had it's National Park designation revoked to make way for the hydro electric project. The United Tasmania Group led the fight to stop this development. United Tasmania group was renamed the Tasmania Greens and this group is acknowledged to be the first Green Party in the world. The fight to save Lake Pedder failed and the region was flooded by the project's three dams in 1972.
